New NAHB Report Shows Single-Family Homebuilding Delivers Major Economic Impact Across Boise Metro

 

According to new analysis from the National Association of Home Builders, single-family residential construction across the Boise metro generated an estimated $3.93 billion in local income, supported more than 41,000 local jobs, and produced $432 million in local government revenue in 2025.

 

The report comes as Treasure Valley communities continue weighing housing affordability, infrastructure needs, permitting costs, and the fiscal impact of growth. While homebuilding is often discussed in terms of growth pressure, the NAHB analysis provides local data on the jobs, income, and public revenue generated by new single-family construction.

 

Prepared by NAHB’s Housing Policy Department, the report analyzed the local economic impact of 9,415 single-family homes permitted across the Boise metro in 2025. For purposes of the report, the Boise metro includes Ada, Boise, Canyon, Gem, and Owyhee counties.

 

NAHB’s local economic impact model has been used in more than 800 studies across projects, local jurisdictions, metropolitan areas, non-metropolitan counties, and states to estimate the income, jobs, taxes, and other local economic activity generated by homebuilding.

 

According to NAHB, 2025 single-family homebuilding activity in the Boise metro generated an estimated:

 

• $3.93 billion in local income
• $2.75 billion in local wages and salaries
• $432 million in taxes and other revenue for local governments
• 41,698 local jobs supported

Economic Impact Continues After Construction

The report also found that the economic impact continues after homes are built and occupied. NAHB estimates that the 9,415 single-family homes analyzed will generate an additional $515 million in local income annually, $73 million in taxes and other local government revenue annually, and support 6,655 ongoing local jobs each year.

 

“Residential construction is often discussed only in terms of growth pressures, but this report shows the other side of the story,” said Adam Capell, president of the Building Contractors Association of Southwestern Idaho. “New homes support local jobs, generate income for local families and businesses, and provide significant revenue for local governments. As communities work through housing affordability, infrastructure, and permitting challenges, it’s important to recognize that homebuilding is part of the Boise metro’s economic foundation.”

Long-Term Revenue for Local Governments

A companion NAHB report examined the estimated local government revenue and costs associated with the same 9,415 single-family homes.

 

Over 15 years, NAHB estimates the homes will generate $1.49 billion in cumulative local government revenue compared with $438.5 million in estimated costs, including annual current expenses, capital investment, and interest on debt.

 

“Every additional cost added to housing has a ripple effect,” Capell said. “When costs increase or delays make it more expensive to build, those impacts ultimately affect homebuyers and the broader local economy. Housing policy should reflect the full picture, including the jobs, income, and public revenue that new homes help create.”

 

The economic impact of homebuilding reaches beyond the job site. Residential construction supports local workers and businesses involved in construction, materials, professional services, real estate, finance, retail, and other sectors. Once occupied, new homes continue contributing to the local economy as residents pay taxes, purchase goods and services, and participate in the community.
